Nobody knows when exactly the history of Kaunas, the second largest

settlement at the crossing of the Nemunas and Neris Rivers had
existed already in the 3-4th centuries A.D. But the first historical
reference to the town dates back to 1362.

 Paneriai
is six miles outside Vilnius. It had been a quiet small suburb
in the Vilnius district up to the beginning of World War II. In
1941, the Nazis turned the Paneriai forest into the masskilling
site. Between 1941 and 1944, at least 100,000 innocent Vilnius
civilians, priests and partisans were killed here and buried into
pits.
