"Lele" means puppet or doll in the Lithuanian language. The Lele Theatre for children was founded in Vilnius in 1958. It's one of three professional puppet theatres of Lithuania. It occupies part of the building of the former Oginsky Palace in the Old City of Vilnius. In the theatre there are two halls seating 240 and 70 persons.
Talented musicians, actors, puppeteers and directors work in the theater. They take part in performing world-wide known fairy-tales such as "The Ugly Duckling", "Little Red Riding Hood", "Pinocchio", "Three Little Pigs", "Cinderella" and others. The repertoire of the Lele Theatre contains 24 performances. Among them there are not only puppet performances, but also shadow theatre shows, and productions where puppets act along with actors on the stage. The directors of the Lele Theatre look for novelties and new ways of expression, and experiment by blending puppets, masks, music, texts and plastics. The theatre also stages Lithuanian folk tales and collaborates with young Lithuanian poets and playwrights.
The performances of the Lele Theatre are popular not only among Vilnius children and parents. Travelers from other countries enjoy these productions too. The theater often goes on tours. It has already performed in Germany, Finland, Austria, India, the USA and other countries. Foreign critics appreciate Lele Theatre activities, and they are very optimistic about its future. The theatre also participates in numerous puppet and children theatre festivals.
